Day 46: West Union, WV (July 29, 1976) – 94 miles

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:

The trip from Athens to West Union, Ohio was 94 miles. We were definitely in the Appalachians now. There were a lot of switchbacks, and the going was very slow. For the first time on the trip, I got sick. I ate too much at a Dairy Queen for lunch, and the last half of the day was miserable. I just put my head down and kept peddling.

From Tani’s journal:

We are really in the Appalachians now, but they are easy so far. The day was pretty easy. The only hard hill was coming into town (like usual). At lunch, some of the guys were having a water fight, and Chris got Nancy soaked. We weren’t even involved, in fact we were both almost asleep.

Butch got sick coming into town. He looked really icky. He went right to bed. We went to bed early. I woke up at 8 P.M. and thought it was morning. I started to get ready to ride. Everyone laughed.

From Nancy’s journal:

We got to West Union at about three o’clock. We came in on the old highway, and it was practically straight up. The newspaper came and interviewed us and took pictures of us. The town seemed kind of hidden away in a little valley. It was kinda neat, but I sure wouldn’t want to live there.

Only three more days, and we’ll be in D.C. I can hardly believe we are almost there! We were in bed by seven o’clock because tomorrow is supposed to be tough.
