Journal Excerpts
From Butch’s journal:

The trip from West Union to Aurora, West Virginia was 80 miles. I felt much better, and the ride was beautiful as far as the scenery went. The living conditions for the people weren’t that great. That night, we stayed in an old grange hall with no running water or heat.

From Tani’s journal:
The Appalachians got harder today. We went up a couple of hard hills, but coming down made it all worthwhile. Just before we got to Aurora, we climbed a steep hill for 3 miles. We celebrated at the top by stopping at a D.Q. The morning went pretty fast, and we made pretty good time. When Judy caught up with us, Brad had to get in the truck cuz he didn’t feel too well.
Judy had a lot of trouble finding us a place to stay. She finally found an old hall, but there was only one bathroom. It didn’t work too well. Judy bought and made spaghetti for us for dinner cuz the store closed really early.
From Nancy’s journal:
We got into Aurora at about five o’clock. We had no place to shower, no running water, and no cooking facilities, so we had to go to bed feeling all hot and sticky. I went to bed at six. I got up later because I couldn’t sleep. There were some guys rebuilding the downstairs, so the hammers and the power saws went until nine thirty. It’s a terrible feeling to be so tired and not be able to sleep. Two more days until D.C.!
