Route Map
Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:
The trip from the Taft Ranch to Jeffrey City, Wyoming was 55 miles. The mosquitoes were so thick you couldn’t believe it. If you stopped for anything, they ate you alive. We had Cutters insect repellent with us, but it didn’t work at all. Jeffrey City was a hostile little mining town which was made up of mobile homes. The gas station attendant went crazy when one of the kids accidentally ran over the bell. We heard stories that the miners had thrown beer bottles at some bikers a few days before. We stayed at the local high school, which was the Bike Inn. It had a swimming pool and showers. Played a riddle game that night, “It likes coffee, but it doesn’t like tea.”

From Tani’s journal:
We got up at 4:00. The tents were wet, and it was cold. We fixed our own breakfast, so nobody had anything hot. Syd rode in the truck again today. For lunch, we stopped at a rest stop, but before we got off our bikes, the mosquitos attacked us so we rode down the road to a store and ate inside.
From Nancy’s journal:
After lunch, we had only twenty miles to cover. We buzzed through that and ended up in Jeffrey City by eleven thirty. We stopped at this gas station because we couldn’t find Syd. Chris ran over the bell, and then Brad did too. Some old guy came out and said, “Quit ringing the bell. What do you think this is a —- circus?” I can’t wait to get off this Bikecentennial Route. Other bicyclists before us have given us a bad reputation. There has been a big difference in the way people have treated us on the route and off. We are staying in the Bike Inn. It is just a high school gym with showers and a swimming pool. We took a nap and later on went swimming.
