Butch’s Journal, Day 14 (June 27, 1976): Lander, WY (Taft Ranch) – 86 miles

The trip from Dubois to the Taft Ranch, Wyoming was 86 miles. The Taft Ranch was an outdoor resort with an old cowboy town included. We camped out again, and I was glad we had our tent. The mosquitoes were thick. Larry caught four good-sized brown trout for his dinner. Needless to say, he was pretty proud. The weather really changed. Going from 10,000 feet to about sea level makes a big difference. It was in the 90’s. There’s a world of difference between the western side of Wyoming with the Tetons and the eastern side with its desert. Something like Washington or Oregon. We had homemade banana splits tonight to celebrate being on the road for two weeks.

From Tani’s journal:

We got up at 4:00. We really streaked in the morning. We really zipped down the hills and then coasted up the other side. We were streaking at nearly 30 mph when it was flat. We made it to the Taft Ranch early. The ranch was kind of neat. It was an old western town with a saloon and jail and everything. There was a stream that some of us jumped in. It was freezing, so we didn’t stay in long. Chris couldn’t decide whether or not to go in, so Butch pushed him in. Christ got him back later though. Butch definitely made a bigger splash.

From Nancy’s journal:

For dinner, we had banana splits. We bought ice cream, bananas, toppings, and nuts. Then we could make our own. I was determined to have only a small one, but as usual I made a huge one. I even had seconds. Tani, Kevin, Lon, Syd, Judy, and I all sat in the shade and ate ours. It was nice to relax and just talk. It’s been awhile since I’ve had time to take it easy. I had to write to my parents. It was the first letter I’ve written to them, so it was about five pages long. I stayed up until eleven writing. I have to get up at four tomorrow, so I had better go to bed.
