Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:
The trip from Lava Creek to Dubois, Wyoming was 53 miles. We woke up to 20 degree temperatures. Ann and I had frost on our sleeping bags. Washed up in a cold mountain stream and headed out. We started up Togwotee Pass, which was 9,658 feet high. This is where we crossed the continental divide. We had snowball fights and went sledding on our vests. I coasted almost 26 miles coming down the other side. Stayed at a dusty grange hall in Dubois. Did laundry and had a beer.

From Nancy’s journal:
When we got up, it was about 20 degrees outside. I was warm inside my sleeping bag, but once I got out, I froze to death. After putting on about all the clothes I had, Tani and I managed to get the tent down. Lon washed out a towel in the creek and hung it up to dry. Instead of drying, it froze stiff. It was that cold. We had to ride about five miles to breakfast. That must’ve been the longest five miles I’ve pedaled in my life. I swear my feet, toes, fingers, and nose had frostbite by the time we got there. But I survived. We climbed up Togwotee Pass today. At the summit, it was 9685 feet high. It took us about three hours to climb the pass. It was hard, but we took frequent rests, so it wasn’t so bad.

From Tani’s journal:
We could see the Grand Tetons behind us for a long time. They are beautiful! I’ve never seen scenery that was so beautiful. We stopped a lot to take pictures. We even got some of us in the snow. Carl had a flat tire, so Nancy, Kevin, and I climbed over a creek and slid in the snow on our vests. It was fun and gave us something to do when someone has a flat tire, besides sleeping. When we reached the summit, 9658 feet, we saw lots of other bikers from the Bikecentennial from the East. They told us that the Appalachians are tough. We had a man take pictures of all of us at the summit sign. We coasted almost all the way to Dubois. It was outrageous.
