Day 44: Chillicothe, OH (July 27, 1976)

Route Map

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:

The trip from Cincinnati to Chillicothe, Ohio was 94 miles. We took off in a downpour. It was one of the few times we rode in bad weather. The temperature was so warm that it was like taking a shower. Everyone was getting very excited because we were on the last leg of our journey. There were only four more days of riding left.

From Nancy’s journal:

When I first went outside this morning, it was warm out. But right when we got ready to go, it started raining. It poured so hard that we could hardly see. But nothing stops us from riding, so we went anyway. We were all in high spirits as it was actually kind of fun to ride in the rain. We stopped after about twenty miles at a doughnut shop. We all had about two doughnuts apiece, and that really put us in a good mood.

For only getting four hours of sleep, I felt good. The next miles went by quickly, and we arrived at about three thirty. We took showers at the swimming pool and bought our dinner. The church we are staying in has air conditioning and carpeted floors. It was so nice! The newspaper came and took pictures of us and a college girl interviewed us. She was really nice, and of course the boys were all talking to her. She stayed until about nine thirty, until we all went to bed.

From Tani’s journal:

We barely got our eyes closed when it was time to get up. After breakfast, it started to pour. We waited for a while under a store roof and then started riding. It was fun because it was warm. It was kind of scary tho cuz nobody had any brakes. About 16 miles out, instead of a pop stop, we had donuts and hot chocolate. When Judy came, Kevin had to hop back in the truck so he would not get sick again. We were going to cut our day down to about 60 miles cuz of the rain, but everyone was in good spirits, and the rain was gone so we went the full 97. At lunch, Kevin got to ride with us again cuz Judy waited to see if we wanted to go on or not. We thought the day would be really tough, but it wasn’t bad. We all are getting excited cuz we’re getting so close to D.C.
