Day 22 (July 5, 1976): Colorado Springs, CO – 87 miles

Route Map

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:

The trip from Denver to Colorado Springs, Colorado was 87 miles. We had to start the day by pedaling through Denver, and that was no easy chore. Denver must be ten miles across and filled with about 1,000,000 stoplights. (I think we hit every one of them.) We took a wrong turn, and it took us three and one half hours to get out and on the road. An electrical storm chased us up the valley and caught us just 10 miles outside our destination. We stopped at an old couple’s house to get under cover. Had to have Judy come and pick up Larry who had still not fully recovered from Laramie. People were getting on each other’s nerves. Kritter hit Ann in the face with a bicycle flag (an accident), and Steve just about runs over her in a parking lot. It was a long hard day, and we got in late.

From Nancy’s journal:

We got to sleep in until six o’clock this morning. We wanted to get through Denver before the heavy traffic came, so we didn’t stop for breakfast. We had to stop at about a million red lights. It was really a pain in the neck. Brad almost got hit by a car. It really scared me. He just rode across the street without even looking. That was about the closest call we’ve had yet. It took us about three hours to get through Denver. By that time, I felt weak from hunger. Then finally, we got to stop and eat.

From Tani’s journal:

It took us forever to get to Colorado Springs. It was only 87 miles. After Denver, we climbed for a while, and then we hit a headwind, then a storm. We stopped for lunch at an older couple’s home. They let us use their phone because we had to call Judy. Larry was sick. While she came, the couple let us go inside, fill our water bottles, use their bathroom, and eat some cookies. They even let Larry sleep on a bed. They were really nice and glad to see us.
