Days 06-07 (June 19-20, 1976): Boise, ID – 62 miles

Route Map

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s Journal:

The trip from Payette to Boise, Idaho was 62 miles. We were accused of being martians just outside of Payette. Kevin almost bites the dust while playing the old hitch a ride trick. He bent his rim so badly that it wouldn’t turn through the fork. Doug conks out on the restaurant sidewalk and awakes to find us all gone. We were only hiding, of course. This was our first two day layover.

Nancy’s Journal:

About one mile out of Payette, Tani got a flat tire. It was dark out still, so we all were shining our flashlights so Larry could see to fix it. We all had on our Highway Department vests so cars could see us easily. From a distance, all you can see are the two fluorescent yellow stripes. A car was coming toward us, so Carl and Steve were jumping and twirling in the middle of the road. Of course, all the car could see was those yellow stripes bobbing in the road. The car drove slowly toward us, stopped, and then drove up a little more. It stopped again and hung a quick u-turn. It took off down a side road and went streaking for town.

At the time, we didn’t think anything of it. But a little while later, we noticed another car was coming. Carl and Steve jumped out in the road and began bobbing and twisting again. The car pulled up behind us and stopped. Only then did we realize that it was a police car. Soon, another police car pulled up right behind it. Each car had two officers inside. We walked up to the car to see what he wanted. The policemen were both chuckling because the car that had come earlier had reported seeing some martians or boogeymen up on the hill.

We all kind of stared at each other until we realized what had happened, and then we laughed and laughed until tears rolled down our cheeks. That guy in the car had seen all our lights and safety vests, and he reported to the police that he had seen some martians. We laughed about that all the way to Boise.

From Tani’s Journal:

We stopped at a gas station for a rest, and Doug fell asleep. We hid all the bikes and things behind the station. Then Syd woke him up and told him that everybody left him and that he and Kevin noticed his bike or he would still be there. It would have been great to have seen his face.

The church here is really neat. A gym and everything. Some of us went to a movie tonight. We saw the “Bad News Bears.” It was really weird; it felt like we were in Portland, not Boise. I talked to Ann for a while today. I really feel close to her. I really feel close to everyone on this trip. It is super outrageous. It was fun getting mail today. I miss everyone, but I’m having a great time. Tomorrow is going to be nice just relaxing. I still can’t believe that guy that thought we were martians. It was so funny. That guy was so embarrassed. It was great. It really made our day.
