Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:
The trip from Vienna to Potosi, Missouri was 84 miles. This is where Kevin earned his name of “Killer.” Nancy had gotten off her bike to take pictures just after going down a long steep grade. Kevin had his head down and ran over her. She was scraped from head to toe. Also, Larry hit a deep chuckhole and bent his rim badly. He and Syd had to hitchhike to Potosi. It was just one of those days. To top it all off, the church we stayed at was very conservative. We had to wear long pants and shirts in their presence.

From Nancy’s journal:
We got up at five o’clock this morning, and we were out of the church by six fifteen. That is quick for us. The terrain was the same ups and downs as yesterday, and we covered the first few miles quickly. As we came flying down this one hill, we could see a narrow bridge ahead. Syd put out a slow-down signal, and so did I. As we entered the bridge, we could see the most beautiful river. Syd wanted to take a picture, so we were slowing down to stop. All of a sudden, something slammed into me from behind. The next thing I knew I was skidding on my stomach on the pavement. I remember thinking, “Wow, I’m falling. It’s really happening.” When I finally stopped, I just laid there on the pavement. I was waiting to see if I could feel any pain. Kevin jumped up right away, and someone pulled his bike off of me. Syd was there asking me if I was alright, and I kept saying, “I’m okay. I’m okay.”

From Tani’s journal:
Kevin felt bad about what happened, but we sort of kidded him out of it, and by the end of the day when he was riding behind me, he kept saying, “I’ll get you next.” When Judy caught up with us, Syd told Nancy she had to ride in the truck. I’m glad she didn’t try to ride cuz she looked so scared.
After about 10 miles, Larry hit a hole, bent up his back rim, and fell off his bike. He wasn’t hurt, but his rim was a mess. Larry rode Syd’s bike, and Syd thumbed a ride to the next town to call Judy. The guy and Syd met us in the next town. The guy took Syd and Larry all the way to Potosi.
At the rate we were going, I didn’t think we were going to make it to Potosi. We finally did make it, only to find out that Potosi had no pool. We went to the river and swam for a while tho. The church was super conservative, so we had to wear long pants and a shirt around the church. Today was definitely our hardest while in the Ozarks.
