Day 20 (July 3, 1976): Fort Collins, CO – 68 miles

Route Map

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:

The trip from Laramie to Ft. Collins, Colorado was 68 miles. After two days of sickness caused by bad drinking water, everyone was raring to go. It’s amazing how some areas of the U.S. have really bad-tasting water. We all pedaled into Colorado singing John Denver’s “Colorado Rocky Mountain High.” Everyone was in great spirits. It was a sunny, hot day when we pedaled into Ft. Collins, which is a big college town. The college girls were all over the place, and our boys were going crazy looking at them. Today is July third, and everyone has been buying firecrackers, bottle rockets, and assorted Fourth of July fireworks. Everyone really seems to be having fun. While Ann and I were soaking up the sun, Kevin unloads a water balloon on us (a perfect shot). We are all excited about reaching Denver tomorrow.

From Nancy’s journal:

We were up at five this morning, and it felt so good to be on the road again. My mind was rested, and my legs are strong. We just buzzed along, and before we knew it, we were forty-five miles out of Laramie. We ate a short lunch at some little store. We usually take a nice long break, but today everyone was raring to go.

From Tani’s journal:

We entered Colorado today. It was neat. Of course, we had to stop and take pictures. It is a lot greener and prettier than Wyoming, but the rest areas aren’t much better. Even the sagebrush is prettier than Wyoming’s. When we got to Fort Collins, we almost had a dozen wrecks because all the guys were looking at the college girls. I wish Pam would have warned me that it was a college town. As soon as we got to the church, everyone went downtown to see the sights (girls and guys). I bought a new camera. The guy in the camera shop was good looking. I wanted to stay all day.
