Day 10 (June 23, 1976): Idaho Falls, ID – 66 miles

Route Map

Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:

The trip from Arco to Idaho Falls, Idaho was 66 miles. I let everyone sleep in til 5 o’clock; they all thought they were in heaven. It was a cold morning, and I broke a spoke a few miles outside of Arco. We met Norman Hershel who was traveling from Denver to Vancouver B.C. He was a little strange, seemed to like sparklers, but was an OK guy. We stayed at the Morrow’s in Idaho Falls. They were relatives of Jim Storey, one of our teachers at Battle Ground. They were great. She fried up five chickens, 25 Idaho baked potatoes, four different salads, french bread, pies, cookies, and the works. They also had a swimming pool which we threw Carl into for acting so cool.

From Tani’s journal:

We slept in until 5:00 A.M. At last, I got 9 hours of sleep. We ate breakfast out, finally. About 5 miles out of town, Butch broke a spoke. It took an hour to repair. We froze. All of us stood in a huddle to keep warm. We met 5 bicyclists today. The first one was Norman. He was traveling by himself from Denver to Vancouver B.C. He was really outrageous. Kind of unorganized. Really neat though. Next, we met Benny and Jean, a young couple from South Carolina. They are moving to Oregon. They went up the East coast and across the U.S. They were really neat. Then we met Rick and Rusty Davis from Corvallis, Oregon. They are going to N.J. to visit her parents. They sounded like they were having a great time. We might ride a while with them tomorrow.

From Nancy’s journal:

We arrived in Idaho Falls about two o’clock. We are at the home of Shirley Morrow. We are sleeping on the basement floor on the carpet. This lady is great. She made us a home-cooked dinner. There was chicken, baked potatoes, jello, cookies, brownies, salad, and pop. You can’t believe how good it tasted after always eating out in restaurants. We even went swimming because the lady had a pool in her backyard. It felt so good. I’ve got to start writing postcards. So far, I’ve only done two.
