Journal Excerpts

From Butch’s journal:
The trip from Pendleton to Baker, Oregon was 94 miles with Deadmans Pass in between. We were a little apprehensive about making that distance and going over a pass of that size. It was a ten mile grade at a 7% slope. We were up at 3 o’clock and ready for breakfast by 4 o’clock. One of the people we met the day before was nice enough to open her restaurant at four so we could get under way early. It seemed like people were like that all the way across the United States. We went up Deadmans Pass with little trouble. Everyone we talked to said we would have to walk our bikes up, but no one did. We found that the gear ratios we had gone to were great. It was actually easier riding up steep grades than walking up them.

From Nancy’s journal:
This morning we got up at three o’clock. None of the restaurants in Pendleton were open, but this one lady opened her cafe three hours early, just for us. I thought that was really nice. We started going up hills today. For example, the pass we went over was called Dead Man’s Pass. We all were positive that we were going to die, but it wasn’t as hard as we thought. We arrived in Baker City about four thirty.
From Tani’s journal:
We went swimming at Radium Hot Springs. It was really relaxing. When we got done swimming, I saw Aunt Alice May and her daughter Kathy. That was really neat. I fixed my own tires last night, with a lot of assistance from Lon and Larry, but I’m learning. Nancy and I bought a 22-pound watermelon today that will be with us for quite a while.
